What type of mentor are we looking for?
An individual with a compassionate heart and knows how to have empathy for people that are going through a hard time. We desire individuals who have a strong faith in Jesus Christ and want to demonstrate the love of God by caring and serving the person they are mentoring.
Requirement: We desire the mentor would go through the mentoring training that has been created by the Rockford Rescue Mission at the designated date offered. The leadership team of the Recovery program would be responsible for leading the training and answering any questions an interested mentor would have.
Expectations: Friendship, listening ear, support, connector, show how love and empathy, ask good self-discovery questions, consistent and reliable, can build trust.
Not expected: Make meeting time a Bible study, give a lot of advice, try and be their counselor, solve their problems.
How the mentoring relationship works:
- Mission will pick and partner resident and mentor up.
- The first three visits need to be at the Rescue Mission.
- Meet twice a month with resident.
- Be prayerful going into your meetings with an open heart.
- Be open to writing letters of encouragement to the resident.
Desired outcome: Each resident would have a personal mentor that would meet with them twice a month. The desire is for each resident to build a community of support around them while they are in the program in hope that these individuals would continue to support and meet with the resident while they transition out of the program to find a job and housing. The more people they have in their corner the better chance they have to maintain their recovery and sobriety beyond the program.
